About ESL Class

Every classroom and teaching situation is very different, and it is very hard to give a general description. In many of the schools with kindergarten students, the teaching areas will be colorful and attractive, often with painted murals on the walls. Often, there are theme-based teaching areas, so that English can be taught in context.

In one franchise academy, all the schools must have rooms that have their own distinct identity. You may be teaching one class in the "Jurassic Park" theme room, complete with dinosaurs on the walls, while you sit around a table constructed to look like a large rock. If you move into the "Kitchen Teaching Room", you will find it resembling a cooking and eating area. These same rooms will be used for teaching older peoples in the afternoon and evenings.

The most general classroom situation is a room approximately as large as a lounge, with a central table that allows up to 12 people to sit around it for a lesson, or a set of individual desks and chairs.

Very few schools will expect you to have more than 12 students of any age in a class at a time. Often the room will have a glass viewing window area, so that people can observe what is happening through it, or check to see who is in the room without disturbing you while you are teaching.

About teaching

You do not need experience. Beginners are always welcome, as long as you are qualified. Employers will provide training to help you adjust to the new environment. Also, all classes use textbooks designated by the school, similar to Western schools. Children's classes range from 5~15 years old are usually based on activities out of a textbook. And adult classes are usually "free-talking, conversational classes."

For Example :

Phonics:

For children aged from 5-7yrs of age.
You will be teaching them the ABC's and words like A is for apple, B is for bake, C is for cat, etc.
Sometimes, you will be required to read with the students, body language may be necessary here.

Composition:

For children aged from 8-12yrs of age.
Reading and explaining the words in basic English. It's more of a vocabulary class and focuses on helping the students with their pronunciation.

Composition and Conversations:

For children in middle school and in high school.
Also in this class, you will be teaching reading, conversation, writing, and dictation. For this class, pronunciation and writing is important. Helping the students to write perfect sentences and correcting their pronunciation is the main part of the class. Some classes have dictations as well. You will play a tape and students will write in the missing words. This is all needed for middle schoolers and up.
